Myofascial Trigger Point
Therapy Myofascial trigger points are tiny knots that develop in a muscle when it is injured or overworked.
They are an area of
hyperirritability within soft tissue structures and characterized by local tenderness and sometimes referred sensations
such as pain, tingling, numbness burning, or itching. An active trigger
point is the cause of the immediate pain. It prevents muscle from fully lengthening and sometimes weakens.
A latent trigger point is not actively painful until pressure is
applied. In trigger point therapy, the source of the referred pain, perpetuating factors, and dysfunctional postural patterning are identified. Through the use of trigger point pressure release and stretching exercises, the therapist quickly eliminates and/or reduces the irritability of the dysfunctional
muscle through massage. Addtional information: Myofascial Release. Myofascial Trigger-Point Therapy. |
