The Editors of Prevention Magazine write, "A national survey of health habits and attitudes, reported in the early 1990s that a record number of Americans are overweight--just about two out of three adults are above the range of weight that's considered ideal for best health. Experts on such trends say we are the fattest people on earth, perhaps the fattest nation in history."
Wow! Not a good heritage for our children.
If today's families are fatter than ever, they are also busier than ever. Cooking has to strike a happy medium. It must be quick, easy, convenient, low fat, and nutritious.
Enter CyberParent's Health on the Go.
The base of a healthy diet is fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes.
Start your week with:
Cooked and ready to eat:
Rice (preferably brown),
Pasta (preferably eggless--Kroger makes it for one source),
Mashed potatoes (add soy milk for healthy potatoes and go very easy on the margarine
because of that health robber: hydrogenated fat)
Frozen or refrigerated as you
prefer:
Beans, cooked, with or without seasoning
Chopped vegetables such as onions, bell peppers, zucchini, broccoli, carrots, corn,
squash, celery, mushrooms, and others your family enjoys.
Fresh, dried, and canned fruit on hand.
We cook ahead for the week. It takes very little time when you do it all at once. At the end of the week, everything that is left either goes to the:
Freezer for an eventual vegetable soup or stew (yes, even the potatoes 'cause they are great and nutritious thickeners),
Trash. You will soon learn to adjust for your family's needs. The soups/stews made from leftovers are great though.
That seems a pretty simple start for Health on the Go! Certainly demolishes frozen pizza or grilled hamburger patties in the health department and pretty much equals that type of food in the convenience department.
