Photovoltaics: PV Solar Systems
DecisionsAbout Photovoltaic (PV)Solar Systems Renewable Energy for Green Homesand Businesses
The two major types of photovoltaic solar electric systems are
Stand alone system, also known as a battery system. With a stand-alone system, you are completely "off the grid"and store your electricity with batteries
Utility-tied, better known as either grid-connected or grid-tied. In this type of system, the PV panels supply electrical power to your home when the sun is shining. At other times, you draw electricity from the grid.
Assuming you have a sunny location with the proper orientation, there is a decision to be made: Tie into the grid or go with a stand- alone system? The differences revolve around the storage systems and their pros and cons.
For some this is an easy decision; for others, it is more difficult. And for those who live in rural areas, there is often no choice but the stand-alone system.
Another decision: The PV system can be installed as a single power unit, or as a hybrid system in conjunction with other sources of electricity such as wind or water power.
