Most of us take our eyes for granted, never thinking of them as muscles or as organs needing special nutrients. The fact is that fit eyes not only need exercise, they need the proper eye-protecting nutrients. In our home we think of leafy greens (spinach, chard, kale, and collard greens) as eye foods. "Feeding" our eyes properly is good insurance for a lifetime of good vision. Our eyes, as well as the rest of our bodies, are affected by the chemicals and pesticides in our bodies. Eat organic whenever you can for the health of your body. Eye Nutrients Vitamin C: Bell peppers (red or green), kale, strawberries, broccoli, oranges, and cataloupe. Vitamin E: Sunflower seeds, almonds, and hazelnuts. Lutein and Zeaxanthin: Spinach, kale, and collard greens. Selenium: Brazil nuts and yeast. Bioflavonoids: Citrus fruits, cherries, grapes, and plums. Zinc: Wheat and nuts. Fatty Acids: Flaxseed. Water: Drinking adequate water each day helps all of your body, including your eyes. Filtered or distilled water is best, of course. |
