This article is an overview of several sleep disorders. Often a sleep study must be made to determine which sleep disorder is present. Insomnia Insomnia is actually a symptom–a term that is used often to indicate any and all stages and types of sleep loss. Restless legs Syndrome or RLS Restless Legs Syndrome is characterized by leg sensations, that cause an almost irresistible urge to move the legs. RLS is usually present prior to the onset of sleep. Relief comes by moving or stretching the legs. Sleep Apnea Sleep apnea means “cessation of breath.” In Obstructive Sleep Apnea the airway becomes obstructed by excess tissue in the airway, large tonsils, a large tongue, obstruction of the nasal passages or even the . structure of the jaw. Narcolepsy This is a neurological disorder and is characterized by excessive sleepiness. |
