Gifts and the giving of gifts: Books make it easy to find a gift for everyone on your list.

I once heard a friend say, "The best gifts for me are books. What books? All books. I will read anything that does not move away from me while I am focusing." That pretty well describes me, too, so I welcome almost all books as gifts. Most people are a tad more particular, however. Still, books will always be my favorite gifts for anyone on my list. When I lived in Dallas, I did a lot of gift shopping at Half-Price Books. That's when I realized how easy it was to buy a personal gift for everyone on your list. And, of course, I like books, so it is a treat to choose them as gifts. I keep a list on my computer. It has the names of friends and family who are likely to receive a gift or a gift card from me. By each name is a birth date and an anniversary date, if applicable. Under each name is a list of their interests as I know them. For young gift recipients, that is an ever-changing list. You should call their parents each year and get it update. For older gift recipients, most interests tend to remain the same. Once I print that list, I am off to the magic land of books. Whether it is online at Amazon or in a local retail store, this is easy, enjoyable gift shopping for me. Another advantage of books as gifts is that inexpensive media mail. Don't try to add the tie you bought for your brother-in-law (you know, the one who never reads) in the same package, though. That won't fly. |
