Grandparents and grandkids go off to the gardening store. Senior Living and Grandparenting:

Gardening Store So, off we go to the organic gardening store. Spend time there: 1. Looking at the various plants. 2. Talking about how much sun the plants need. 3. Deciding if the sun requirements will fit your grandchild’s garden spot. 4. Buying a perfect plant or two for your grandchild’s garden. 5. Looking at seeds and deciding which ones to buy. If your grandchild can not read or is too impatient to read, read everything to him/her. This is an educational and bonding experience all in one. Gardening Budget You probably have a budget for "grandchildren expense." Even if you don’t, it is a good time to teach grandchildren the money lesson. For a young child, set a limit on number of plants or seed packets he/she can buy. Don’t wait until your grandchild is ready to buy everything in the store. Talk about this in the car on the trip over to the gardening center. "We are going to buy two plants (two packages of seeds) today. We can take our time looking but that is all we are going to buy for now. " Older grandchildren can have a monetary budget set for them. They may even want to add their own money to the project. Again, discuss it on the way to the garden center. Gardening Time Bedding plants don’t last forever, so leave time for planting and watering them on this grandchild’s visit. Leave Something for Next Visit Let your grandchild’s garden grow gradually by leaving something for the next few visits. It is a project to look forward to with grandma or grandpa. Call and talk to him/her about the garden in between visits. Digital internet pictures are great through the internet. |
