Comfort in Green Building

A Comfortable Temperature in Green Homes

Note: This website is for the climate zone that includes North Texas and Central Texas. Regardless of your climate zone, the first priority for green building or energy-efficient remodeling is to hire a green builder or architect who understands and uses up-to-date green building practices for your area.

A comfortable temperature at a reasonable cost in energy and money is an important feature of a green home. It is individual matter of perception and is not determined by heat alone.

Conditions other than heat that affect comfort are:

  • Humidity .
  • Air movement (drafts or fans, drafts).
  • Temperature of surrounding surfaces (fireplace, stove, or cold window) .
  • Activity levels of people (watching TV or mopping floor) .
  • Personal perceptions of comfort.

Most people are comfortable and easily maintain their own internal temperatures when temperatures around them are between 68 degrees and 80 degrees and when they are also:

  • Sitting
  • Lightly clothed
  • In still air
  • In humidity of close to 50%.

Perception

Some people are comfortable in summer at 80 degrees. Others judge that much too hot. Daytime and nighttime perceptions of comfortable temperatures vary also.
