July and August in North Texas will not change. The sun will always beam down, rain will always be scarce, and most golf courses and traditionally landscaped yards will always turn brown without copious irrigation. Yet, come summer in Dallas-Fort Worth, swimming pools simmer, parks and golf courses are watered profusely, and yards stay green as their owners keep up with the water-guzzling Joneses. That is primarily because Texas is a large state and DFW has flooded much of the land around Dallas-Fort Worth and even into East Texas. Suburban sprawl has made future water reservoirs near Dallas-Fort Worth somewhat impractical. East Texas seems be balking at letting DFW flood more area there. Thus, it seems significantly expanded water conservation must be a major component of the Dallas-Fort Worth area’s future efforts to ensure adequate supplies.
