Remodeling a home for energy-efficiency in the south always starts with the windows. We want to keep solar radiation from entering our windows. Solar screens that intercept solar radiation, or films that prevent infrared and ultraviolet transmission are useful retrofits for hot climates, as are awnings. Fast-growing vegetation is probably the least expensive way to block that sun, though. One solution is to place a large potted plant such as a banana plant outside a south or east window in summer. Use of potted plants while waiting for a tree to grow also works. A window trellis outside a south window with deciduous vines is another solution. When you are considering solutions to heat gain from windows, remember that the the primary purpose is to keep sunshine from entering the windows. Back to remodeling index Do you need
