Economicsof Solar Hot Water: Storage Tanks Practical Green Improvements for Energy-Efficient Homes
The U.S. Department of Energy writes, "Most solar water heaters require a well-insulated storage tank. Solar storage tanks have an additional outlet and inlet connected to and from the collector. In two-tank systems, the solar water heater preheats water before it enters the conventional water heater. In one-tank systems, the back-up heater is combined with the solar storage in one tank."
The main reasons for installing solar hot water tanks are additional space (they are usually larger–80 gallons and up) and because certain entities require it to receive their solar hot water heater installation incentives.
It is argued that the additional space in a solar hot water tank means extra storage so you never run out of hot water. You do not necessarily need that extra space, particularly if you are connecting two water tanks.
You do need it to receive some installation incentives.
A good consultant can help you with this if you need clarification.
