An infrared camera or digital thermometer is occasionally used to show places of heat loss and/or leakage such as those in the walls.

It is rarely needed in an newly constructed home and is not always needed in an older home..

The digital thermometer costs less than $100 and is a good piece of equipment for a handy person to have in his/her tool chest.
