In the past, most of us read too many
articles about homes in the north, usually without realizing that home
remodeling should be climate specific. Consequently, many Texans rush out to replace
their doors and windows when they feel the first frost of winter or
the first 90-degree day of spring or summer.
majority of windows and doors in a North Central Texas home don't need
Most of the preventable heat loss or gain from windows is from air leakage. This can be stopped by weather stripping and/or caulking without replacing the windows.
If this is done correctly, it will make most old windows or doors 90% as air tight as a brand new one for a fraction of the cost.
Every home owner should try this before replacing doors and windows or other energy renovations:
Again, heat radiates with line of sight.
Many people resist this information--particularly if they have been reading about or had a salesperson telling them about, replacing windows.
Try this on a cold day in winter.
In a sleeveless shirt, stand with one side toward a window with the window coverings open. This means the blinds or curtains open, not the window open.
The side facing the window will start feeling chilly. Now turn with the other side facing the window. Again, the side facing the window will feel chilly. That is because your body heat is radiating to the window.
Now put on a sweater and try that again. Whereas, your face might feel chilly, you have broken the "line of sight" from your body to the window.
Caulking: You might feel that cold air is coming in around the windows, when actually it is your body radiating its heat to the cold glass.
Then does not mean you should not caulk your windows. Please do that. But also wear long sleeves, long pants, and shoes (slabs get really cold) in your house when it is cold.
And you might consider hanging curtains on your windows in the winter.
Admittedly there is a lot of pressure from industry to replace windows. If you do replace your windows, be aware that they is a very long payback period. There are much better ways to spend your energy remodeling funds than losing it here.
