What Makes an Electronic Toy Work for Kids? A List for Parents to Consult.

Electronic Toy Questions:  Many of these questions are appropriate for other toys. It is a good checklist for parents to consult before ordering a toy.

Electronic toys are can be good teaching aids. They can also be boring in a few minutes.

Savvy parents should ask these questions before ordering an electronic toy--in fact, many of the questions below fit any toy purchase:

Is it age appropriate? Some tasks are just too advanced for children at certain stages. When parents order them anyway, they cause frustration and  inadequate feelings. If this happens to you and your child, put it up for a few months.

Will the toy grow with your child?

Is it too heavy or awkward for your child?

Is there some positive reinforcement for correct answers and encouragement for incorrect answers

Does it promote so many skills that it does none of them well? That is a common fallacy in toys.

Is it fun for your child!?!

Mechanics

Are the controls easy to use--well spaced, easy to see, uncluttered?

Is the screen large enough, easy to read, and using upper and lower case?

Is the volume adequate with a control system and is the  speech understandable?

How is it powered?

What about service or further directions? Any toll-free numbers to call or website to consult.
