Men and Impotence or Erectile Dysfunction: Defined and Explained

By Rob McLean

Men and Erectile Dysfunction or Impotence: A good rule of thumb is that ED from organic causes has a gradual onset. If the onset is abrupt, it increases the likelihood that the erectile dysfunction is psychological in nature.

For the Male of Today:

From CyberParent

Erectile dysfunction, or ED, is usually defined as the consistent inability to achieve or maintain an erection that permits satisfactory intercourse or other sexual activity.

What does this men to you and me?

Of course, this means nothing to me.

But to you, it may mean you can't achieve an erection sufficient for penetration.  But it can also mean that you can achieve an adequate, even a glorious erection, then be unable to sustain it.  ED may occur all the time, part of the time, or only with certain partners, sexual practices, or positions.

ED is a condition that torments 100 million men worldwide, 30 million of those in the United States. And that could be an   understatement because embarrassment, on both the part of the patient and the healthcare professional, has kept many men from seeking help and/or discussing this condition in depth.

I also think a lot of men fear their erectile dysfunction is psychological in nature, and for many, that makes is even more embarrassing to admit.

In 80% of the cases  ED is not psychological in origin. However, even when only psychological in origin 20% of the time, erectile dysfunction always involves performance anxiety, and usually leaves a feeling of shame, a kind-of, "I'm-not-a-man feeling" in afflicted men.

But how can you tell if your ED psychological in nature?

A good rule of thumb is that ED from organic causes has a gradual onset. If the onset is abrupt, it increases the likelihood that the erectile dysfunction is psychological in nature.

And the majority of the men affected by ED are 65 years of age or older. That doesn't mean younger men are exempt, however.  One doctor buddy of mine said drinking, smoking, and depression are probably the main causes of erectile dysfunction in younger men.

Hey, erectile dysfunction is not a symptom of age, however. It is a symptom of disease or medicines related to disease. Although the diseases could be age-related or even diet-related, it is not a natural progression of age in a reasonably healthy male. In other words, you don't just wear it out.
