Our body: A Large Water Bag Our most important nutrient. |
When we exercise, we should consume two to three cups of water before exercising to avoid dehydration. During exercise, particularly when it is hot and dry, we should stop every 20 minutes to drink six to eight ounces of fluid. |
Water You won't find water listed on any nutrient charts but everyone knows that humans can't live more than a few days without water. The world's bodies of fresh waters are our earth's most important asset. Humans are virtually a big water balloon: Five quarts of blood and 40 additional quarts of fluids held together by a sack of skin. When you exercise, that "sack" will sweat. When exercising, it's possible to sweat out more than two quarts of fluids per hour. A humid vacation spot can accelerate this fluid loss because evaporative cooling slows. |

We can get some water by eating foods that are high in water but most of our water will come from drinking eight to ten glasses of water each day. |

Here are a few suggestions from our surfers for doing
this: Everyone in our family has a "jug" of their own
water in the refrigerator . That way they can drink directly from the bottle. This works
for us! When my kids run in thirsty in the summer, they first have a glass of
water. Then they can have something with what my eight-year-old son calls some
"taste." House rule! Note: The sugar content of sports drinks causes them to remain in the stomach longer than regular water. If you must drink these, dilute with water to receive benefits sooner. I started my children with bottles of water when they were babies. And that
was always what they had to drink except with meals. Believe it or not, they like water. We can get some water by eating foods that are high in water but most of our water will come from drinking eight to ten glasses of water each day. |
