The obvious members of your Anti-Loneliness Network can be found here:
Old Friends Look up your old friends--think back about the people you enjoyed in your youth you no longer see. Maybe you moved away or they moved away. It is possible you will no longer have anything in common but maybe you will pick up right where you left off. It does not hurt to give them a call. You might even consider a high-school reunion, even if you have never attended one. It is really fun to see old friends and this is an easy way to see many of them at one time. Volunteer Groups Volunteer groups normally welcome people of all ages. Still, if you attend a meeting and everyone is in their 20s and 30s, it will probably not be a comfortable place for you--or for those young members. But you might fit in perfectly as a mentor. The important thing with a volunteer group is that you 1. Get active 2. Get active in the jobs that involve people. Don't take the solitary jobs like the newsletter or keeping the database. Get out with the members and make friends. Church If religion is already a part of your life, and church does not decrease your sense of loneliness, change churches. Take your time and visit churches several times before making a decision. It may be that your church is too large or too small. Keep looking until you find a perfect fit for you. If religion is not a part of your life, consider joining a church. If you don't have traditional beliefs about religion, look outside the normal denominations. Unity Church and Unitarian Universalist Church might fit your less traditional ideas about religion. Investigate the eastern religions: Hindu, Buddhism, Taoism or something totally non-traditional such as Wicca. You can also find a spiritual or meditation group in your area. Family No senior wants to be a burden to their children. You don't want them to feel guilty if they don't include you in their every activity. You won't be a burden unless you build your life around them. |
