It always depends upon location. 

The amount of space needed on your roof depends on the size of the system you purchase and the suitability of your roof (orientation, tilt, shade) for PV panels. 

PV modules are available in a range of types. Some  offer a greater percent of sunlight converted to electricity than others.

And...Higher efficiency modules typically cost more, as you would expect.
