Walking in serene natural areas has great health and psychological benefits. We still crave the woods, the country hills, or the ocean even when when we happily reside in the city. We need nature to feel alive and to feel a part of the whole universe. "Biophilia" is the word coined by E.O. Wilson for the human propensity to affiliate with other life forms. We humans have an instinctive deisre to feel that we are a part of the natural world. Medical professionals now recognize that being outdoors has a positive effect on the quality of life. Walking can open up the outdoors to you in a way nothing else can. If you are fortunate enough to live in the country, you are probably well aware of the theraputic effects of walking outdoors. If you are near the mountains or seashore, you are that much more fortunate. Most of us, however, live in a boring and crowded city. Us city dwellers have a problem finding areas that are naturally beautiful. Try investigating the parks (safe ones) in your area. A solitary walk in a beautiful park can be a wonderful way to get in touch with nature. |
