There is one drawback to walking: sun exposure. Sunlight causes

  • The development of brown age spots or maculas.

  • Mottling or uneven coloring of the skin

  • Bleeding into the skin or purpura can be caused by the combination of sun damage and thinning of the skin's subcutaneous layers.

But long-term exposure to sun can lead to more serious conditions such as

  • Actinic keratoses--rough, red, precancerous lesions.

  • Skin cancer.

The strength of the sun is measured as the UV index. It is affected by the atmospheric conditions and where you live. The color of your skin is also a factor in developing skin cancer or other skin conditions.

The UV index is usually available in weather reports. The higher the index, the more dangerous is the sun. Use that knowledge to protect your skin!

Other sun protections include:

1. Wearing a hat with an all-around wide brim.

2. Using sunscreen. Use a SPF sunscreen of at least 15, higher is probably better. Apply it liberally and often, particularly when you are sweating. Don't forget your neck, ears, backs of hands, and backs of legs. It is a must, even when you think you are walking in the shade of trees.

3. Wearing sunglasses. Since sun can damage your eyes, wear those sunglasses on your walks. Also check to see that the lenses of your sunglasses have UV protection.

5. Wearing proper clothing. It is better to keep your skin covered when the UV index is high. Long sleeves, long pants, and hats, as well as reflective clothing, are the order of the day for walkers.
