If you don't walk regularly, add a good night's sleep to the long list of benefits for beginning to walk. It may seem like the fact that walking improves sleep for all of us, including insomniacs, is just common sense. Recent studies do support the commonsense view that walking and other exercise improves sleep. Research also shows that people who exercise often take less time to fall asleep than people who don't. And walking can help you spend more time in deeper stages of sleep. This is important because waking up is more common during the lighter stages of sleep. One caution, though. Timing is a factor, too. A brisk
walk close to bedtime may cause you some problems with sleep. If you've been
walking close to bedtime and having trouble falling or staying asleep, or
even having problems with insomnia, arrange your walk earlier in the day.
Try that brisk walk in the afternoon for several weeks to see what
happens. |
