In addition to all the physical benefits, walking also brings with it a host of social perks, smiling humans, and new friends. We are social beings and walking offers a way to be social. Having a regular partner can be a social outlet and a boredom reliever. It also reinforces the commitment to walk. Try group walking. Walking with a group can be a good way to keep in touch with old friends or make some new ones. There are walking groups in almost any city. Look in the newspaper or search the internet for a group near you. Many malls have walking groups that increase social interaction and offer you a place to walk in unfriendly weather. Even walking alone increases your chances of meeting a new neighbor, almost guarantees a returned smile from a child or another adult, and increases your feelings of being in touch with your community. |
