Walking in water is good exercise while being kind to joints.

Water adds intensity to your exercise because water has 12 to 14 times the resistance of air. It is also cooling on a hot, summer day.

Walk in shallow water so that you can maintain your balance. It is best to walk in water no deeper than your thighs.

When walking in natural waters such as a lake, creek, or ocean, watch out for:

1. Rocks.
2. Hidden ledges.
3. Tides.
4. Currents, even in shallow water.
5. Flash floods.
6. Pollution. It is best to stay out of stagnant, small bodies of water.

If you are walking in a pool, you will not have those problems, of course. Even then, take  time to know where the pool ladder and steps are in case you need them.

And just as with swimming, it is better not to walk in water alone, in case of an accident.

Walking in very cool or cold water can contribute to stiffness, particularly if you have arthritis.

When you walk in or near water, remember that water easily reflects sunlight, so remember your sun screen.

If you are walking in a natural setting, avoid walking under overhangs. Falling rock or even soil can be dangerous.

If you have been injured in other sports, walking in water can be a good way to maintain a degree of fitness while you are healing. Ask your medical professional first, please.
