One of the primary benefits of a regular walking routine is weight-loss. And does it ever work! But don't think that a moderate-intensity walking program  will work quickly or you will be disappointed.

For some, walking at a moderate pace yields longer workouts with less soreness  and leads to walking more miles and burning more calories on a regular basis.

In a walking, weight-loss program, it's best to be active every day.

If you are in a hurry to loose weight, high intensity cardiovascular/aerobic exercise is much more effective in burning off the excess body fat. Walking briskly or alternating brisk walking with jogging will burn more body fat and help you loose eight more quickly.

How you walk is important, too. How do you walk?

Regular walking also helps control weight cycling. Weight cycling is the repeated loss and regain of body weight.

It's easy:

  • Walk with your chin up and your shoulders held slightly back.
  • Walk so that the heel of your foot touches the ground first. Roll your weight forward as you walk.
  • Walk with your toes pointed forward rather than to the side.
  • Swing your arms as you walk.

In addition to improving our appearance, weight loss can improve our health.

Some weight-related health problems include diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, or high blood sugar levels. Even a small weight loss of 10 to 20 pounds can improve your health by lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Rules of Thumb: A three-to-five minute walk after each meal is worth four pounds less body fat annually. Four flights of stairs a day burns up a pound of body fat in a year. A regular candy bar eaten daily or almost daily will cost you from 5 to 20  pounds annually.
