There are an estimated 1.2 million dogs in the North Central Texas area. If the average dog produces about three-quarters of a pound of waste a day, approximately 900,000 pounds of waste is being produced each day in North Texas!
That’s a lot of dog waste. In fact, it is 328,500,000pounds per year. That is 164,250 tons of dog waster per year.
There are many reasons why dog owners should pick up after their pets and flush the waste down the toilet or wrap it in a plastic bag and throw it in the trash. These reasons include:
Dog waste is one of the many little sources of pollution that can add up to a big problem.
Dog waste is smelly and unsightly,
Dog waste is a health risk to pets and people, especially children as it carries bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can threaten the health of humans and wildlife.
Dog waste is also a water quality issue. Decaying pet waste in a water body consumes oxygen and sometimes releases ammonia. Low oxygen levels and ammonia can damage the health of fish and other aquatic life.
Dog waste also contains nutrients that promote weed and algae growth. Cloudy and green water makes swimming and recreation unappealing and even unhealthy.
If left on the ground even in your own backyard, pet waste is washed by rain into storm drains, where the water runs into creeks, streams, rivers, and lakes without being treated or cleaned.
Dog waste can also enter a water body if dumped directly down a storm drain or when a dog is playing in the water. That’s why dog owners should pick up after their pets and flush the waste down the toilet or wrap it in a plastic bag and throw it in the trash.
Keep waste out of storm drains and keep a watchful eye out for dogs playing in a local creek, river, orlake.
Responsible dog owners are commended!
