SEER is an abbreviation for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The SEER rating is the Btu of cooling output during a typical cooling-season divided by the total electric energy input in watt-hours (W·h) during the same period. It is the most commonly used measure of the efficiency of consumer central air conditioning systems. The higher the number, the more efficient the unit. As of January, 2006, an air conditioner must have a SEER of at least 13 to be sold in the United States. Higher efficiency models have a SEER of up to 21. A high SEER rating is not of particular importance in North Central Texas. When existing units are still functional and when the time value of money is considered, retaining existing units and keeping them well-maintained rather than replacing them is the most cost effective. This is certainly true in Dallas-Fort Worth.
