You Can Be a Work-At-Home Mom: How to Get Started!

A couple of years ago, I quit my “real” job and started working exclusively from home.

At the time it seemed like a terrifying decision but now I earn a full-time income. In fact, I earn more than I did before!

It’s a plunge I will never regret taking and it really made me realize that anyone can be a work-at-home mom. You just have to have the right strategy!

If you’re thinking about becoming a work-at-home mom, here is your guide to getting started:

Step 1: Set a Goal

Before you start your journey to becoming a work-at-home mom, you need to establish some clear goals.

Think about why you want to start working from home as well as your professional goals.

Everyone has unique aspirations so it’s important to really think about yours.

For example:

  • Do you want to earn more money?
  • Do you want to spend more time with your family?
  • Do you want to utilize your skills and knowledge?
  • Do you want to follow your passion?

Once you figure out your goals, you’ll have a better idea of how much time and effort you will have to invest in your plan – which is the next step in getting started as a work-at-home mom!

Step 2: Create a Strategy

After you have your goals established, it’s time to come up with a plan and strategy.

First of all, what is it you want to do from home? What types of at-home career are you looking for?

At the end of this article, I’ll go over some work-at-home job ideas but for now it’s important to focus on something you can do as well as want to do.

Start by listing your skills, talents, and previous experience. This will give you a good starting point when it comes to choosing what it is you want to do at home.

For example, do you want to keep your current job but work from home? Do you want to become a freelancer in your industry?

Or do you want to do something completely different?

Do you want to start your own business?

Each option can take you in a different direction so it’s important to have a good strategy before you start working from home as a mom.

Make a list and take some notes! This will help you organize your thoughts before you get started.

Step 3: Find the Work

The next step in becoming a work-at-home mom is to start networking and looking for a job

Start by updating your resume and creating a LinkedIn profile. Depending on the type of work you want to do, you can also check out sites like UpWork and Fiverr to sell services and find jobs.

Take a close look at each job posting to ensure that you have the skills and know-how the employers or clients are looking for. Using your resume and a portfolio (or samples) of what you can do, start applying for jobs.

It also helps to network with other individuals doing what you want to do. They can offer valuable insight as well as steer you in the direction of job openings.

Step 4: Set Up Your Workspace

An important aspect of working from home as a mom is setting up a workspace where you can be productive and focus on your work.

Being a work-from-home mom can be challenging due to a lack of privacy when you have young children around.

However, if you want to succeed, you need to approach your work as professionally as possible. To do this, set up a home office.

This should be a remote part of the house but, if that’s not possible, at least find a quiet spot where you can focus.

Be sure to only use this area of your home for work. If you can create a space that feels like an office, you will be more productive during the day.

Step 5: Organize

Another struggle many work-at-home moms face is staying organized. Not only do you have to organize your work but you have to organize your time as well.

It helps to create a daily schedule and clearly define the hours you plan to work. Be sure to give yourself breaks!

You should also create a family calendar to keep track of activities and to-do lists to make sure household chores are taken care of.

Staying organized is key to maintaining a work-life balance.

Work-From-Home Mom Job Ideas

As I mentioned above, here are some ideas when it comes to work-from-home mom jobs:

Start a Blog

There are so many moms out there making a full-time income simply by having a blog! This side hustle does take some time and dedication but it can definitely pay off in the end.

And you don’t have to be a professional writer to get started!

Simply decide what it is you want to write about but make sure it’s something you have knowledge and experience in. Attracting people to your blog means positioning yourself as a trusted expert.

As more people visit your blog, you can start monetizing your content by placing ads or using affiliate marketing where you earn a commission off items your readers buy.

You can also offer your own products and services through your blog to earn an income.

The possibilities are endless!

Become a Freelancer

Freelancers are individuals who work on a client-by-client and project-by-project bases. This industry includes writers, graphic designers, web designers, virtual assistants, and more!

You can use sites like Fiverr to start offering your services and gain clients.

When you do start freelancing, make sure you have a portfolio of your work. This can be a website that includes examples of what you can do.

Freelancing involves a lot of what is called “pitching” where you directly contact clients you want to work with and offer your services.

However, you can also use job boards to apply for freelancing jobs.

Open an Online Store

If you are interested in making a product, you can sell it through your own online store using platforms such as Shopify or Etsy.

You can sell physical products such as art and crafts or you can focus on digital products such as planners and templates.

When you sell physical products, be sure to pay attention to the cost of producing your product versus what you are selling it for.

Alternatively, digital products are free to make so you’re looking at a wider profit margin!

Offer a Coaching Service

Coaching services can span a wide range of services including business coaching, parent coaching, nutritional coaching, and life coaching.

So if you have found success in your life doing something in particular, you can sell your services helping others achieve the same!

In addition to coaching services, you can also create and sell online courses.

These are a great way for moms to make money from home because you only have to design the course – you earn money every time someone signs up!

You Can Be a Work-At-Home Mom!

With the right dedication and focus, you too can become a work-at-home mom and enjoy the amazing benefits that come with it!
