Parents Find Parenting Easier Using Time-Outs: Defining Time-Outs
Parents and Parenting: Defining time-out for parents is like sports. Time-out for sports and for parental discipline is a brief interruption of the actions. Parents who use time-out are thankful that they found this form of discipline.

Time-Outs Defined for Parents
Parents and Parenting: Time-out is a loss-of-privilege penalty that works for parents even when the child is in the middle of a tantrum!!
Good information for parents:
Actually the concept of time-out is easy for parents to understand in sports–it is a brief interruption of the action.
The same is true in discipline. In disciplinary matters, parents will find timeout is a brief (hopefully) interruption of any child’s disruptive behavior.
For example, Joe, the child of parents’ Kellie and Don, is very angry and is actually having a tantrum. His parents will find time-out can be a very effective form of discipline for little Joe.
Time-out is a loss-of-privilege penalty that works for parents even when the child is in the middle of a tantrum!!
Parent Tip: Parents use time outs to stop behaviors, not start behaviors.
Time-out works because it takes the child away from the action, attention, or toy rather than taking the attention, action or toy away from the child.
Parents can use timeout to stop a negative behavior by removing their child from the area of trouble, then placing the child in an isolated area.
Parents Tip: This is effective because it immediately stops the disruptive behavior.
Time-out is unpleasant for the child because it takes away his/her freedom to play and interact with friends and family.
And time-out is safe because it serves as a cooling-off time for both the parent and the child.
