How Do Parents Track Time for Children in Time-Out?

Jan Wilson

Parents and Parenting: Having a timer for time-out sessions is important. It helps parents be fair and consistent.

Good information for parents:

If the child asks, "Is it time to come out yet," parents ignore the child.

At the end of the ticking, a bell rings and everyone knows it is time for the child to come out.

When the child learned to tell time, another parent purchased a stop watch to hang on the inside doorknob. The child watched the stop watch and brought it back to mom when the minutes were over.

Having a timer is important. It helps parents be fair and consistent.

Parents Tip: There is another use for a timer. Having that timer also helps parents not to give in too early.

Better yet, it will stop persistent questions such as, "Is the time up yet?"

When a child leaves the timeout location before her time is up, parents merely, escort her back ot the location. They reset the timer back to the beginning.

Parents do this every time she leaves her time-out location early until she finally gets the picture!
