Solar panels need real estate

  • On the property (land) and/or

  • On the Roof

Most of us are really surprised when we see how much space has to be devoted to solar panels to get a few kilowatts.

Photovoltaic panels are not very efficient.

Add the pitch and sun requirements and many homes and businesses just do not have enough "real estate" for adequate solar panels.

That’s the bad news.

The good news is that panels are getting more efficient every year. If you wait, you should be able to use less space for more kilowatts with every year that passes.

And, of course, other technologies are advancing, too, so your best bet now is to wait and see.

Oh, yes, did I mention that you need to make your home or business energy-efficient before even thinking of adding solar electricity?

And did it I mention that that is not true for solar hot water IF you have an electric or propane hot water system? Solar hot water can even be your first step for energy efficiency.
