Alternatives to Chemicals – Information and Recipes for Cleaning Our Homes with Sustainable Cleansers!
Natural Dish washing
1/2 tsp liquid soap (castile, peppermint)
1/2 tsp borax
Squeeze of lemon
1 pint warm water
1/4 cup baking soda
1/2 cup borax
1/2 cup vinegar
1 gallon water
When we open the door of our dishwasher to add a spoon, think about the heated and toxic chlorine facial we can’t avoid. And even the next day, the chlorine smell is prominent when we open the door of the dishwasher.
This chlorine is vented to the air in our homes as a normal part of using the appliance. This can be a major cause of respiratory problems. Chlorine is also volatile when heated.
Drain cleaners are certainly some of the most hazardous products in our homes. They are used todissolve human hairs, skin cells, and other waste in drains. They will do thesame thing if splashed on us during use.
- First try a plumber’s snake and boiling water.
- Pour 1/2 cup borax down the drain
- Follow with 2 cups boiling water down the drain.
Drain Cleaner #3
- Pour 1/4 c baking soda down the drain
- Follow by 1/2 cup vinegar.
- Cover drain and let sit for 15 minutes, then follow with 2 quarts of boiling waterdown the drain.
Garbage Disposal Freshener
Grind ice and orange juice in the disposal.
Grind lemon peels, orange peels, grapefruit peels—any citrus peeling will do a good job of freshening the disposal and the kitchen in general.
Dissolve together in warm water:
- 1/2 cup vinegar
- 1/2 cup borax
Apply with sponge or spray bottle.
Pour strong soap and salt on the spots and place in sunlight. Keep the spots moist, and repeat as often as necessary.
A Better Idea: Ovens use an incredible amount of energy. A better plan is to quit using the oven altogether. Buy a solar oven, cook on top of the stove and/or use the microwave. Ovens make excellent storage for pans and an occasional warming device.
Oven Cleaner #1
- Mix together:
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 2 T salt
- Hot water as needed to make a paste.
Apply and allow paste sit for 5 minutes before washing off.
Caution: Keep off wires and /heating elements.
Oven Cleaner #2
- 2 T liquid soap (castile, peppermint)
- 2 tsp borax
- 1 quart warm water
Spray on oven and wait 20 minutes, then clean.
Oven Cleaner #3
For very tough stains, scrub with very fine steel wool and baking soda.
Note: Before using these green cleansers,try them in an unobtrusive place to make certain they do no damage.
